Drone operators must have liability insurance to cover damage they may cause to third parties, whether material damage or bodily injury.
This obligation is regulated by Law 18/2014, specifically Article 50, which refers to the operation of remotely piloted civil aircraft.
What Sums Insured Must Drone Insurance Policies Include?
Liability insurance policies for drones must include different sums insured depending on the weight of the aircraft. The greater the potential risk, the more important it is to review the insured capital and the exact wording of the policy.
Article 4 of Royal Decree 37/2001 of the Spanish Ministry of Public Works sets out the compulsory amounts. These limits are expressed in Special Drawing Rights, or SDRs, and vary according to the different drone weight bands.
At the time of the original article, the equivalent value of 1 SDR was 1.27561 euros. Because these references may change over time, it is advisable to check the current applicable amount before taking out or renewing cover.
Why Review the Policy Wording?
Beyond the compulsory sum insured, it is important to check who is covered, which uses are included, whether professional activity is declared correctly, and whether exclusions could affect the type of flight being carried out.
