ADECOSE created the Health Observatory, successor to the Health Commission of this association of insurance brokers, with the aim of monitoring the good practices of insurers in the health line, both in healthcare assistance policies and medical expense reimbursement policies.
The insurance brokerage Vida SR, together with other major brokerages in Spain, joined the launch of this Observatory.
How Will This Work Be Carried Out?
Unespa has a good practice code for health insurance, and the observatory of Adecose will contact insurers to prepare and later publish a report reflecting each company’s level of compliance with that code.
What Happens If an Insurer Does Not Want to Collaborate?
If an insurer does not wish to collaborate in this work, the report cannot be prepared for that company and the observatory will simply be able to record that fact.
Martín Navaz, president of ADECOSE, rejected certain practices occurring in the sale of medical insurance, clearly referring to offers with very low premiums to attract clients followed by an increase adjusted to each client’s individual claims ratio.
The insurance regulation that recently came into force requires insurers to inform the future client, before taking out the policy, about the objective criteria for possible later premium increases. One of these possible criteria may be claims history, but if the client is not informed beforehand, the insurer may not increase the premium on that basis.
This does happen in other lines such as car insurance, but it is not the same for the client. If your car insurance price increases, you can change insurer without difficulty; if the same happens with health insurance, finding alternatives is not so easy.
The ADECOSE Health Observatory will offer its collaboration to insurers.
How Was 2015 for Health Insurance?
The companies that consolidated their position at the top of the medical insurance ranking were ADESLAS, SANITAS, ASISA and DKV.
This line saw an increase of 3.13% compared with 2014 premiums, reaching a premium volume of EUR 7.356 billion.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
